NotebookLM Launches in Google Classroom

The era of the messy, disorganized binder is officially coming to an end. On April 28, 2026, Google Workspace for Education announced a game-changing integration: students can now create Personal Class Notebooks using NotebookLM directly within Google Classroom.

This update transforms a student's classroom materials from a static list of files into an interactive, AI-powered knowledge base that understands their specific curriculum.

A New Narrative for Modern Learning

Imagine a student named Maya. She has three months of lecture notes, five PDFs of textbook chapters, and a dozen shared Google Docs for her History class. Usually, studying for a final means hours of scrolling and re-reading.

Now, with NotebookLM in Classroom, Maya can click a single button to Create Class Notebook. The AI instantly ingests all her materials for that specific class. Maya can then ask, What were the three primary causes of the industrial revolution mentioned in my teacher's week 4 notes? and get an answer grounded purely in her actual class content complete with citations. It’s not just "AI" it’s Maya’s AI, trained only on what she is actually studying.

Four Key Features for Students

  1. Instant Source Integration: Students can pull in assignments, class materials, and personal notes from Google Drive into a single, organized notebook with one click.
  2. Guided Study Tools: NotebookLM can automatically generate study guides, practice quizzes, and Frequently Asked Questions based on the uploaded class content.
  3. The "Expert" Assistant: Students can engage in a multi-turn conversation with their notebook to clarify complex topics, summarize long readings, or brainstorm essay outlines.
  4. Privacy-First Learning: These notebooks are strictly personal. The AI only uses the sources the student provides, and the data is never used to train global models, keeping student work private and secure.

Admin & Teacher Controls

  • Admins: The feature is available for Education Plus and Teaching and Learning Upgrade tiers. It can be managed via the Admin console under Workspace Intelligence settings.
  • Teachers: Teachers can suggest specific source sets for a project, helping students ground their AI notebooks in the most relevant materials.
  • Rollout: The feature is moving through an extended rollout starting today (April 28), with full visibility expected over the next two weeks.

We’ve spent decades teaching students how to find information. With NotebookLM in Google Classroom, we’re finally teaching them how to master it. By turning a pile of documents into a living conversation, Google is giving every student a personal tutor that knows exactly what was said in class.
